Turning Waste into Wonders: Grade 7 Students Lead the Way in "The Smart-Scrap Challenge with AI"

Innovation met environmental responsibility at the GIIS KL as our Grade 7 students took center stage in "The Smart-Scrap Challenge with AI." This Inter-House Competition (IHC), meticulously organized by Ms. Anuradha Janagiraman, seamlessly blended cutting-edge technology with urgent ecological goals. By integrating core educational values like GIIS 9 Gems (including Academic Excellence, Creativity, and Community Connection) alongside crucial United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ( UN SDGs) like Quality Education, Sustainable Cities, and Climate Action, the event aimed to instill lifelong sustainable habits in the next generation.

The challenge kicked off in the school's IT Lab on April 28th and 29th, 2026, where all students from classes 7A, 7B, and 7C rolled up their sleeves for the first round: Build Your AI for Smart-Scrap Segregation. Working during their afternoon sessions, the young innovators dived into the mechanics of machine learning using Google’s Teachable Machine. Students trained their own AI models using image recognition tools, teaching the computers to accurately distinguish between various waste streams such as biodegradable and non-biodegradable items. This hands-on experience demystified the basics of Artificial Intelligence, transforming it from an abstract concept into a tangible tool capable of solving real-world environmental crises.

The excitement reached its peak on May 6, 2026, when the winners of the preliminary round gathered in the school auditorium for the grand finale. The final round tested both the intellect and the imagination of the participants. It began with an intense, application-based Kahoot quiz designed to push their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the limit regarding the complexities of scrap segregation, waste management, and resource utilization. Following the quiz, the students transitioned into the highly anticipated Upcycling Pitch. Here, teams collaborated fiercely to pitch creative, eco-friendly design solutions aimed at reducing waste and breathing new life into discarded items. The final presentations beautifully demonstrated the students' growing scientific temperament, teamwork, and budding public speaking abilities.

Faced with a room full of brilliant ideas, the esteemed panel of judges, Ms. Rupa Mathew and Ms. Padmaja, had the challenging task of scoring the pitches. The students' deep understanding of science concepts and sharp decision-making were evident across all presentations, but a few houses ultimately stole the show. When the final tallies were announced, Chrysanthemum House claimed the coveted first place with their outstanding innovation. Sunflower House followed closely, securing a well-deserved second place, while Hibiscus House rounded out the podium with a stellar third-place finish.

By the end of the competition, the true victory belonged to all the participants. "The Smart-Scrap Challenge with AI" succeeded not just as a competition, but as a launchpad for future-ready thinking. It left the Grade 7 students with a stronger sense of environmental stewardship and a newfound curiosity for emerging technologies, proving that a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future is well within our reach when driven by young, inspired minds.
